In contrast to the present calm in US-Japan relations, the decade between 1985 and 1995 was marked by a war of words in negotiating rooms as well as in the media.

In 1994, Mike Armacost, former US Ambassador to Japan recalling earlier trade talks, said: "I don't remember a time when members of the delegation, in some cases not even seeking anonymity, spoke with such acerbity about the other's negotiating team,"
