


Susan Orpett Long is a Professor of Anthropology at John Carrol University. She is the author of, "Family Change and the Life Course" (Cornell University East Asia Papers, 1987) and editor of, "Lives in Motion: Composing Circles of Self Community in Japan" (Cornell University East Asia Papers, 1999). She has published book chapters and articles on the topics of aging, health care, and gender in Japan. She served as the founding coordinator of John Carroll University's East Asian Studies program from 1987-95. Last year her book, "Caring for the Elderly in Japan and the US: Practices and Policies". Susan Orpett Long, ed. London: Routledge, 2000. was published.
Sally Hastings is an associate Professor at the Department of History, Purdue University. She received her Ph.D. from the University of Chicago in 1980. Her specialty is Modern Japan. Her current research focus is the creation of a women's public sphere in twentieth century Japan. Her teaching areas are East Asia, especially Japan and Korea. She is the co-editor of the U.S.-Japan Women's Journal, English Supplement.
