CHEVRON

Targeted Program Selection and Implementation

OBJECTIVE

  • Chevron approached The Asia Foundation about making one targeted grant per year in countries where the company has a significant presence.
  • Chevron outlined broad program parameters, such as sustainable economic development and education, and named specific countries where it would consider programs most beneficial.

APPROACH

  • For the past four years, The Asia Foundation has presented a selection of specific programs to Chevron, based on their parameters.
  • Key Foundation program staff in Asia, staff in San Francisco headquarters, and Chevron staff in the U.S. and Asia then collaborated to make the final decision about which program to support.

PROGRESS

  • The recent grants focused on Southeast Asia. One grant provided funds to create science and technology learning centers in public primary schools in a Philippines community with a large Chevron operation.
  • Chevron also supported a CO2 reduction and energy efficiency training workshop and exhibition in Thailand. Most recently, they supported an ongoing scholarship program for Cambodian girls who, without this assistance, likely would not continue their education past the primary level.

IMPACT

  • The collaboration between Chevron and The Asia Foundation staff resulted in programs having maximum impact, and ensured that Chevron’s community relations goals and strategic philanthropic goals were met.
  • These targeted programs addressed vital needs in these specific communities, and represent activities The Asia Foundation would otherwise not have been able to support.

Through a partnership with Chevron, Cambodian students received scholarships to continue their education.
