COUNTRY AND ISSUE ANALYSIS AND ASSESSMENTS
The Asia Foundation’s long-term presence in the Asia-Pacific region gives it an in-depth understanding of the complex political, economic, and social factors that influence development and policymaking. Foundation staff are increasingly called upon to produce assessments and analyses for the international development and corporate community.
Examples:
- In Bangladesh in 2003, the Foundation researched and produced a comprehensive country governance assessment for the ADB. The Foundation also produced four development strategy concept papers for CIDA on elections, community policing, eGovernance, and economic governance.
- In Indonesia, the Foundation prepared a country strategy paper for the U.K. Department for International Development (DFID) that would reflect DFID ’s new global pro-poor approach to development and governance.
- The Foundation produced a study for the Japanese Embassy in Pakistan that provided an overview of local organizations and their activities in two provinces to guide the development of a Japanese NGO support fund for rural areas.
- In 2005, The World Bank supported the Foundation to manage and produce a Strategic Conflict Assessment in Sri Lanka to take stock of the peace process and highlight opportunities and entry points for international engagement to support the process. This study was supported by the governments of the United Kingdom, Sweden, and the Netherlands.
- In 2002, the Foundation created the Global Leadership Program for the Boeing Corporation in Korea. This customized seven day lecture program, designed for Boeing’s team of senior managers, aimed to further their understanding of cross-cultural business practices and Koreans’ perceptions of Boeing’s local presence.
